Infographics are a helpful tool used to visually represent scientific findings in an understandable format. I chose to create an image-heavy infographic of about the endangered whale species in hopes to spread awareness for creating a safer world.
Lindsay Kolowich Cox explains that image-heavy infographics enable numbers and text to be distributed through shapes, designs and photography. No matter how intriguing these types of infographics look, your audience should be able to read the product on all types of devices. My infographic follows a three act story of how a new viewer will feel inclined to donate to an organization that helps wildlife. The top half of the infographic gives context to the topic and what whales are specifically endangered/vulnerable. The bottom half explains the reasons for saving and protecting whales can help protect Earth’s climate, while concluding with links to more information.
Bill Dennison, a Professor of Marine Science, wrote a blog for scientists on about how to practically communicate their findings. Dennison explains, “Visual elements should have enough information or captions to allow stand alone comprehension.” In the “Why Help” section, I used captions beside the graphics that help explain how the three elements rely on each other to continue existing. The gestalt principle of continuation is used here because do not explicitly say the three elements are related, it is inferred through the dotted circle.
Creating infographics that anyone can understand is important for my future career in social media marketing because I could be working with any industry, including one that is scientific based. Helping causes and sharing data requires me to understand the users and audience when creating messages.
Are you ready to help the whales in order to protect the future of our planet?
