The way to succeed in life is to listen to those around you. Stop letting things go in one ear and out the other. Social media has allowed for everyone to stay connected and informed about everyone and everything but this leads to fake news and selective listening.
I use social media everyday personally and professionally but in order to keep the two separate I have to engage and listen to my audiences differently. When I first joined Instagram it was an app to show the fun things my friends and I were doing but over the years the app has overtaken by advertisements and news. I used to worry about the amount of likes and comments I was getting on a personal post because the home page algorithm was sharing posts to my followers in chronological order so I was under the assumption it was easy for my post to be found and interacted with. Now… now I can barely find a post that my friend, who is sitting next to me, posted because my home page is filled with posts of people I don’t follow. These changes to the algorithm have however made finding small businesses and companies easier to find.
While I have had personal social accounts I am still learning how to social listen to business accounts. I am currently interning at The Eleanor Roosevelt Center as a social media intern and am excited to learn which strategies for successful social listening work. The main goal of my internship is to help the non-profit organization plan, create and distribute social media content about events and Eleanor Roosevelt’s life.
