Creating a personal brand is important for everyone but students who have a goal of joining the communications industry, like myself, should establish it early.
In the first year of my undergraduate program I decided the typeface I would use for my personal and professional brand would be Bodoni 72. At the time I had not done background research on the typeface. I had just found that the serif typeface’s thick and thin strokes enforce a professional tone when presenting myself.
Bodoni 72 is recognizable for being featured in Vogue and Calvin Klein. Both of these brands are fashion brands that are branded in an elegant yet fun way. Each of the fonts within the Bodoni 72 typeface can be used in to achieve different goals.
Applying Mood to Type
How do you feel as you read the words below? They are the same word but each would need to be used in different contexts to make sense.
One of the amazing things I’ve experienced while creating graphics is the different ways I feel while reading type. Cath Caldwell, the author of Graphic Design for Everyone, explains, “Every typeface has its own personality and projects a specific character – choose wisely to set the right mood and tone for your design project”.
The word Dinosaur and Skeleton can both be read in the context of decaying bones or it could be read as a fun learning tool or living thing. In my work for Marisa Forti’s business I need to make sure to choose a typeface that will give the reader a sense of strong and healthy bones so the middle typeface Kefa works best amongst the three fonts displayed.
Applying the Brand to a Business
After redesigning Fortified Performance’s logo last week I focused on incorporating it and the elements that represent each of Marisa Forti’s services into merchandise. Currently Marisa has work out shirts available on her website which does help with brand awareness but adding additional merchandise will increase it.
